Clinical Pilates is Pilates prescribed and supervised by a physiotherapist to treat a specific problem; gym Pilates is a group fitness class.
Both use similar exercises, and sometimes the same reformer. The difference is who designs your program, what it’s built around, and what happens when something hurts. If you have an injury, ongoing pain or a health condition, that difference matters.

What a clinical Pilates program looks like
- Assessment. Your physio asks about your history and goals, then looks at how you move, your strength and what triggers your pain.
- A plan built for you. Exercises are chosen to target what the assessment found, not a generic sequence.
- Supervised sessions. Your physio corrects technique, watches your response and adjusts exercises in real time.
- Progression. As you improve, load and difficulty increase, using equipment like the reformer to support or challenge you precisely.
- Independence. The aim is a program you can keep doing, whether that’s at home, at the gym or in a general class.

Which one is right for you?
Clinical Pilates is usually the better starting point if you:
- Have pain or an injury, or keep getting the same niggle
- Are returning to exercise after surgery
- Are pregnant or postnatal
- Have a health condition that affects how you exercise
- Have tried classes before and found they flared things up
A gym or studio class is a great option if you’re pain-free and want general fitness, strength and a fun way to move. Many people start with clinical Pilates, then move into general classes once they’re confident and their symptoms have settled. That’s a good outcome, not a step down.
Can I claim it on private health?
Physiotherapy sessions run by a physio as part of your treatment are usually claimable under your extras cover. Ask our team how your sessions are billed, and check with your health fund before you book.
