Arthritis and Clinical Pilates

Arthritis is one of the leading causes of joint pain and reduced mobility, affecting millions of Australians. Living with arthritis doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you enjoy. While joint pain and stiffness can make exercise feel daunting, the right type of movement is one of the most effective ways to manage arthritis and improve quality of life.

At Niche Physio and Pilates, we regularly work with people living with arthritis through our Physiotherapy consults, individualised Clinical Pilates sessions and the GLA:D program. Our goal is simple: help you move with greater confidence, reduce pain, and stay active for the long term.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a broad term used to describe a group of conditions that affect the joints. The most common type is osteoarthritis, which develops when changes occur within the joint, including the cartilage, bone and surrounding tissues.

Common symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Joint pain during or after activity
  • Morning stiffness
  • Reduced flexibility or movement
  • Swelling around the joint
  • Difficulty with everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs or getting out of a chair
  • Reduced confidence in movement

Although arthritis cannot be cured, there are many evidence-based treatments that can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Why is exercise important for arthritis?

It is common for people with arthritis to avoid movement because they are worried exercise will make their joints worse. However, research tells us the opposite.

Australian and international clinical guidelines recommend exercise, education and self-management as the foundation of arthritis management.

Exercise benefits your joints in several ways. Movement stimulates the production and circulation of synovial fluid – the joint’s natural lubricant – which helps reduce friction and allows joints to move more smoothly. It also helps deliver nutrients to the cartilage, which relies on movement rather than a direct blood supply to stay healthy. In addition, strengthening the muscles surrounding a joint improves its support and stability, helping to reduce the load placed on painful structures during everyday activities.

Appropriately prescribed exercise does not “wear out” arthritic joints. They help keep joints moving, improving their ability to tolerate load and supporting long-term joint health.

How can Clinical Pilates help?

Clinical Pilates is an individualised form of exercise rehabilitation led by a physiotherapist. Unlike a general Pilates class, every program begins with a comprehensive assessment to ensure exercises are tailored to your symptoms, movement patterns and goals.

Clinical Pilates is particularly well suited to people with arthritis because it focuses on controlled, low-impact exercises that can be modified to suit different levels of pain and mobility.

Some of the benefits may include:

  • Improved strength: Stronger muscles help support painful joints, improve stability and make everyday activities easier.
  • Reduced stiffness: Gentle, controlled movement encourages joint mobility and can help reduce feelings of stiffness.
  • Better balance and movement control: Pilates challenges stability, coordination and body awareness, helping you move more confidently.
  • Individualised progression: Your exercises are progressed at a pace that is appropriate for you, allowing you to safely build strength and function over time.
